No 3 - PHANTOM FREEDOM - On the tracks of an ideal
Freedom is taken for granted in the Western world. Every individual is allowed to make his own life decisions, keep what he earns and take part in the political debate. Although we respect this formerly hard-fought right in many ways, the foundations of freedom are being rocked more and more.
Democratisation has become established in the majority of countries. Yet participation at the polls in Europe has been declining for years and the radicalisation of politics makes many of those who still vote doubt the individual’s freedom of choice. Although the global consumer society has reached a high point, the economic crisis and fear of terrorism encourage fantasies of the strong state. Are we too spoilt to appreciate our freedoms? Or would it be right to stop idealising freedom as an inalienable asset? How much freedom will be good for the world of tomorrow? And how free can we really be? ABSTRAKT No3 goes in search of answers.
With contributions from security expert Henrique Schneider, musician and spoken word poet Scroobius Pip, clergyman Heiner Schubert and brand expert Bethany Koby.
